Image source: Austral ResourcesQIC has committed a further $15 million through the Queensland Critical Minerals Fund (QCMF) to Austral Resources (ASX:AR1) to increase capacity at one of the state’s most strategically important copper processing assets.
The follow-on investment will expand Rocklands from a three to approximately 4.5 million tonnes per annum sulphide processing facility, increasing regional processing capacity at a time when existing infrastructure is constrained.
As one of few large-scale processing plants in the North West Minerals Province capable of accepting third-party ore, Rocklands has the potential to unlock stranded copper deposits, support emerging producers and establish a regional processing hub for next phase of Queensland's critical minerals growth.
QCMF Fund Manager Joshua Risson said the investment demonstrated the Fund's conviction in both the strategic importance of the Rocklands asset and the strength of its relationship with Austral Resources.
The Fund’s initial investment was based on the opportunity to bring strategically important processing infrastructure back into production
Joshua Risson - Fund Manager, Queensland Critical Minerals Fund
“Since then, Austral has continued to execute against its strategy, giving us confidence to increase QCMF’s support as the company progresses to its next phase of growth.
“Rocklands has the potential to become critical regional infrastructure, providing much-needed processing capacity that can unlock stranded copper resources across the North West while supporting Austral's own long-term growth.
“Processing infrastructure remains one of the key constraints to growing copper production in the region. Expanding Rocklands strengthens Queensland's critical minerals supply chain and creates new opportunities for emerging producers that otherwise lack access to processing capacity.”
The investment will be structured as a royalty, consistent with the Fund's objective of deploying flexible commercial capital into strategically significant critical minerals infrastructure.
Austral Resources Chairman David Newling said the QCMF’s continued backing represented an important endorsement of the company's strategy.
QIC has been a valued partner throughout our transformation, and this follow-on investment reflects the confidence that has developed through that relationship,
David Newling - Chairman, Austral Resources
“The expansion of Rocklands is just as much about supporting Austral’s regional consolidation strategy as it is about creating new opportunities for copper development across the North West Minerals Province.
“Since QIC's initial investment, Austral has continued to strengthen its operational platform, advancing refurbishment planning at Rocklands while progressing our broader strategy of building an integrated dual-hub copper business centred on the Mt Kelly and Rocklands processing facilities.”
The company has also strengthened its balance sheet and continues to pursue opportunities to consolidate regional copper assets and processing pathways.
Rocklands represents one of the few large-scale sulphide processing facilities in North West Queensland capable of accepting third-party material.
Expansion of the plant is expected to increase regional processing capacity at a time when existing infrastructure is constrained and demand for toll treatment continues to grow.
