Each member of the QIC team is chosen for their specialised skills, knowledge and the expertise they bring to the organisation. The majority of our staff have tertiary qualifications and are members of professional industry bodies.

Board


QIC has a nationally respected independent Board of Directors. The current Board consists of non-executive Directors including the Chairman. The Chief Executive is not a member of the Board.

The Board oversees the affairs of QIC and sets the framework for the organisation's long-term success. It assumes overall responsibility for corporate governance and has established systems to monitor compliance with policies, relevant legislation and standards of ethical behaviour. The performance of QIC, its management and staff, are monitored both directly by the Board and through its Board committees: the Audit and Risk Management Committee, the Staff Committee and the Product Development Committee.

Over 30 years experience in financial markets holding senior roles with major financial institutions in the international and Australian equity and debt markets.

QIC's core competency is in providing superior management of balanced portfolios. A key element in delivering this superior performance is the quality and stability of our staff. Rapid exchange of information across operating divisions coupled with short decision chains, allows us to be productive in our initiatives and to respond quickly to events as they arise. It also provides the foundation for rigorous and complete risk management.

Responsibilities: Leading, planning, coordinating and directing QIC's operations.

Previous experience: Extensive consulting and academic experience. Under Treasurer and Under Secretary, Queensland Treasury. In that role, Doug served as a Director of QIC.

Directorships: QInvest, Investment and Financial Services Association, Queensland BioCapital Funds Pty Ltd.

Trustee Committee for Economic Development of Australia. Member of Council, Queensland University of Technology. Councillor, National Competition Council. Governor of the Queensland Community Foundation.

Hazel McNeilage

Head of Funds Management

Appointed: 2010

Responsibilities: Reporting to the CEO, Hazel has responsibility for QIC's investment management boutiques and client-facing activities. As a member of the Executive Team, she also participates in the development and implementation of QIC's overall business strategy.

Previous experience: Prior to joining QIC in January 2010, Hazel spent eight years with Principal Global Investors (PGI) in a variety of roles, including most recently Global Head of Sales, Relationship Management and Client Service, based in New York, and before that Head of PGI's Asia ex Japan business, based in Singapore. In that role she oversaw investment management teams in Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, India and China. Prior to that, Hazel was with Towers Perrin in Australia for 14 years in a variety of roles including Head of Asset Consulting for Asia Pacific. She has over 30 year's experience in global investment management, asset consulting, pension/superannuation and life insurance across the UK, South Africa, Asia, Australia and the US.

Hazel holds a Bachelor's Degree (1st class honours) in Mathematics, Economics and Operations Research from the University of Lancaster, England, and is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries (England) and the Institute of Actuaries of Australia.

Appointed: 2001.

Responsibilities: Managing QIC's cash and global fixed interest investments. Member of the QIC Alpha Committee.

Previous experience: More than 19 years experience in the finance and funds management industry, including roles as Head of Strategy at NRMA Asset Management, Senior Vice President at BT Funds Management, Head of Fixed Interest at Suncorp Investment Management and Director, Foreign Exchange, Syntec Economic Services. Awarded Insto Bond Manager of the Year in 2005 by Insto Magazine. Susan is currently undertaking an MBA at the University of Queensland.

Responsibilities: Supports the CEO in the achievement of QIC’s strategic and business objectives and provides leadership and direction to the finance, corporate services and operations functions to meet QIC’s objectives.

Previous experience: Robert joins QIC from Bank of Queensland, where he most recently held the position of Group Executive, Retail Financial Services, and the role of Chief Financial Officer prior to that. He also has extensive experience in retail and investment banking in London, Brisbane and Sydney, with exposure to the funds management industry in his roles as Chief Financial Officer at Suncorp and NatWest Markets.

Managing Director of Organisational Risk and Legal

Appointed to QIC: 2007

Responsibilities: Supports the CEO in the achievement of QIC’s strategic and business objectives and provides leadership and direction to QIC’s organisational risk and legal function, through the establishment and implementation of organisational risk framework and enhances the culture of responsibility and risk management within QIC.

Previous experience: David was admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Courts of Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria in 1998. David worked in the corporate and financial services divisions of Clayton Utz in Sydney, and Linklaters in London and Tokyo, followed by four years in the Financial Services Group of Macquarie Bank in Sydney and Brisbane. David joined QIC as a senior legal advisor in 2007 and assumed the role of General Counsel in November 2008.

Appointed: 2009.

Responsibilities: Supports the CEO in the achievement of QIC’s strategic and business objectives and provides leadership and direction to QIC’s People Change and Culture function, through the development and implementation of QIC’s people strategy.

Previous experience: Chris joins QIC from Mercer HR Consulting where he most recently held the position of Principal, Human Capital. He has extensive experience in both commercial and HR management, with significant international experience of the strategic HR function in UK, Europe, USA and Australia. He has gained exposure to the investment and funds management industry in various consultancy roles for Navigant Consulting as Head of Organisation, People & Change Practice and Accenture.

Managing Director, Investment Services

(Currently undertaking a client focused project role)

Appointed: 1994.

Responsibilities: Managing QIC's Investment Services workgroups, including Services Management, Business Improvement, Product Development Strategy, Client Integration Services and Performance and Reporting.

Previous experience: Prior to joining QIC, Margaret was responsible for production and change management with News Limited (Melbourne). She also has extensive experience in advertising and administration.

Michael Pennisi

Managing Director, Corporate Strategy

Appointed: 2005.

Responsibilities: Lead the development of QIC’s strategic vision in conjunction with the CEO and Executive Leadership Team (ELT). Develop and manage the corporate strategy and planning, corporate brand, external communications and business change.

Previous experience: Michael joined QIC as Head of Corporate Strategy in June 2005. Prior to joining QIC, Michael held a number of senior executive positions with QSuper, most recently the position of Chief Strategy Officer and Deputy Chief Executive. Michael has extensive experience in strategy development and all aspects of superannuation fund governance, the regulatory environment, marketing, investing, financial planning and administration through senior positions with QSuper, QInvest Limited, the Insurance and Superannuation Commission (now APRA) and AMP.

Directorships: Michael is a member of the IFSA Global Markets Board Committee and is Chair of the IFSA Marketing and Measures Committee. Michael is also a member of the ASFA Retirement Outcomes Committee.

Appointed: 2000.

Responsibilities: Managing QIC's operational workgroups including investment & portfolio services, information services and infrastructure services.

Previous experience: Darren has spent the past 15 years in the finance and funds management industry. He spent the first five years of his career as a Chartered Accountant before moving into investment banking in London where he spent a total of six years in treasury and derivatives related functions at Barclays Capital, CS First Boston and Daiwa Europe.
